Hi, I’m Betty Vosters-Kemp, co-owner and co-founder (with my husband, Michael Kemp) of Avalon Hearing Aid Centers. I’m delighted that you landed on the Avalon website and are willing to spend some time getting to know us. May I tell you a little about who we are and how we came to be?
It’s important that I do this because I want you to know about the people that make up this organization called Avalon Hearing Aid Centers. That may sound a little odd but what I’ve come to know is who you choose as your hearing healthcare provider is equally as important as choosing the right technology for your hearing loss. Most people don’t realize this until it’s too late.
Avalon Hearing truly came to life as an idea way back in 1988 when my soon-to-be-husband, Michael and I were sitting in a conference room late into the night creating a business plan for our new practice.
At that time, I had been working as a regional manager for a well-known hearing manufacturer for nine years. I traveled all over Canada assisting business owners with their hearing healthcare practices. It was a great training ground and I knew that one day, I, too, would want my own hearing practice.
I met Michael, the California regional manager for the same company, at an international hearing convention. Prior to this position, Michael had been an audiologist for a prominent Ear, Nose and Throat clinic for ten years. As the story goes – we met, fell in love, dated 3000 miles apart and finally decided to get married and start a business! I immigrated to the States, and as they say, the rest is history!
I will never forget what my father said to me when I told him of our plans. Dad said, “Well, I would be worried if you were starting a restaurant but you both know the hearing business.” We combined Michael’s medical experience with my retail experience to create what we call a hybrid hearing healthcare practice.
A New Way to Think About Hearing Care
What my father didn’t realize, is that no one wants hearing aids. Lots of people need them but no one wants them.
Together, we decided to change the way people feel about hearing aids. Out of this commitment, we started Avalon Hearing Aid Centers and opened our first office in Sacramento in 1989. This commitment still motivates us each and every day to grow and improve individually, and as a company. We are always looking for ways to improve ourselves and therefore, your experience.
Who you choose to help you with your hearing, is critical to your success so we carefully select the people who work at Avalon. We are a community-based company that gives back to our community through educational programs, our Hearing Missions, sponsorships and community service.
But reconnecting people to what matters most in their life is at the heart of what we do. I guess you might say that we’re not your average, ordinary hearing aid company. But then, we didn’t get rated #1 in the nation for customer service, being average or ordinary.
